Home Economics & ICAN (Ideas for Cooking and Nutrition)

Our county's Extension home economics program helps strengthen family life. In a rapidly changing world, the challenges facing individuals and families in our county are great. With A problem solving philosophy, we strive to develop programs to deal with complex issues facing local families. We are helping people build leadership and other skills. We teach through group training sessions and local programs and community projects. We are dedicated to solving community needs, concerns and issues.

Of the leading chronic diseases, diabetes is a particular concern in Hidalgo County. About 200 citizens of Hidalgo County are currently being treated by medical services for diabetes and another 200 are expected to be undiagnosed. If left untreated and uncontrolled, diabetes can result in serious complications: blindness, amputations, kidney disease, and stroke, heart disease and death. There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be treated and complications can be prevented or at least delayed. Simple changes, such as healthier food choices and adding regular physical activity can have a significant effect on the health and well being of people with diabetes. Hidalgo County Extension has long taught these principles to the general population. Because of the current collaboration between Hidalgo County Extension and New Mexico Department of Health’s Diabetes Control Program, we can more effectively reach those within Hidalgo County with or at risk for diabetes.
